Progress: Repaint a Classic

Worked during and after class. Would've kept going had another class not came in. Sigh. Probably about another... 2 hours? We spent the first hour critiquing our abstracts, which I keep forgetting to take pictures of. Update coming soon.

Starting to get into the details and fixing things. I do believe I've accidentally made too much space at the top and too little space at the bottom, but there's no going back now unless I want to start all over again and I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!

Excited for my beginning painting final project, which is whatever we want as long as we want to portray SOMETHING... which is what I really need to work on the most in my pieces. Stoked, but so nervous because I'm not sure what I want to do. I might try to paint one of my recent drawn concepts, some of which I haven't posted because I'm too lazy to scan things. Things about feeling unsafe wherever I go, or things about how smoking is not only bad for you, but for people around you.

Notes to fellow painters:

1. It is good exercise for the shoulders to carry a wet canvas across campus while trying not to seem like a show off, look crazy, get paint on yourself, and to not get debris all over the canvas.

2. It is useless to try not to get paint on your clothes unless you've got one of those fully body jumpsuits, but that still classifies as clothes, so you're still screwed either way.

Final Project: Zombie Stop Motion WIP

Hooray! That is my new stolen catchphrase.

http://hellxia.deviantart.com/art/Zombie-Stop-Motion-WIP-162366830

Super low quality, and only about half the movie is mostly done.

So far, 3 days in class, and probably an equal amount of time outside class. Got another week to finish it all D8 D8 D8

Flash and the stamp and patch tools on PS CS4 are pretty much the most amazing things ever. Bloody expensive though. Soon... soon...

Going to be awesome when it's finished.

Assignment: Repaint a classic piece

I chose to paint Francois Lemoyne's Woman Bathing because I need work on nude figures and landscapes [I think I already mentioned that?]. Just doing an underpainting for right now. I know I'm not supposed to put color in it, but I couldn't help it. Also, I ran out of dark brown paint. I am lazy and dislike mixing paint. lol

In just the one hour I've spent on this so far, I've learned that this is a cross-shaped composition. Everything is based of a giant cross in the middle. Feels great to already be learning so much!

Here is the original. I hope to get somewhere near this:

After 2 hours. Ughhh I am so impatient. Need to learn that dark comes before light. Details are annoying.

And after 3 hours. I should've gone to bed... 3 hours ago. Hooray. ಠ_ಠ [stupid macs won't give me the font to see this stupid face aughhh it is the best and the worst face]

The colors are much warmer in my room than in the study room, that's why the photo colors look different.

Note to self: Twist upper body to the left, make leg on right thicker, make ankle on left less bulbous, can still lower dirt / decrease water size a bit, consider raising the head, tilt girl on right's head forward from the top, decrease pointedness of elbow, work more on trees and fabric

Things I've learned tonight:

1. Cross composition
2. The lighting is very different depending on where you are ughhhh
3. I must overcome my impatience because DARK COMES BEFORE LIGHT

What do Vegetarians Do When Vegetables Attack Progress

Painted over almost everything. I like this a bit better. Using a reference is much easier, but I'm not going for photo-realistic, so that will be the slightly more difficult part... or maybe not. I'm not sure. We shall see.

For the next project, we're supposed to re-create a painting from the 1800's. I wanted to work on painting nude figures and backgrounds with actual scenery, so I chose Woman Bathing by Francois Lemoyne, which should be here, but the website is going super slow right now, not sure why. It's also a better quality picture than a bunch of others, therefore easier for me to re-create.

But what I'm excited to work on during the summer is a spoof that may or may not have already been done on Jean Francois de Troy's The Ascension, as seen here. When I first saw it, the colors and figure positions just shouted Superman at me... so... what's up sacrilege? I'm gonna replace Jesus with Superman. That's what's up.

AND, currently my favorite song is Tommy Mac's Another Day. It's a very upbeat chiptune song that always makes me want to bob my head and sway haha I would link it, but I'm not sure what the link is for it. Found it on thesixtyone. WIN!

Update

I got the Social Justice Art Internship at the Multi-Cultural Center on campus! SUPER STOKED!!!! Was so worried because the supervisor that called me sounded hella down and I'm pretty sure she sighed at one point and I was like... dangit. But I got it. YESSSSSSSS!!!! BOOM. DONE. THANK YOU AND GOODNIGHT.

lol

As for the "What do vegetarians do when vegetables attack?" painting, I'm revamping it A LOT. Completely redoing the lady [ref here], fixing the sky, might change the hill colors. Changing the light source so that it is coming from the left. Yadda yadda. Might as well completely redo it. Right? What have I got to lose when it comes to an assignment for a beginning painting class?

And for my final project for Beginning Digital Art, I decided to sort of make a bigger deal out of the zombie stop motion animations that I've done in the past. Pretty stoked. My professor showed me the basics of how to use Flash and I was like... 2012 acting status. MY... GOD... [2 minutes later] ... MY... GOD!!! But yeah, it was pretty amazing and so I am excited for that as well. Not sure what I'm going to do for my Beginning Painting final.... eek. Even though I feel like a lot of people bullshit the work in class, and I do it too... not even gonna lie... but I actually learn a lot through... bullshitting. lol Just gotta go all out and see what happens, learn things along the way.

It's the journey that counts, not the destination, right?

ALSO: thesixtyone is pretty much AMAZING for pretentious indie hipster music. Check it out. A lot of the downloads are free too. 8D LEGIT.

And if you want electronica, then 22tracks is good. Updates every week, I think?

So I have this test tomorrow...

No worries, I'm almost done studying.

For the lulz. I quite like the small details I have added to this picture... but you can't really see them. Wellp.

Two New Short Stop Motions

Been wanting to do something for a long time with these zombie figures I received from my floormate last year.

Song clip from Kid Cudi's Dat New New (Viking Remix)

Song clip from Designer Drugs' Datamix 06

Also tried something different with these ones. EDITED THEM in photoshop. Crazy, right? You don't really notice it unless you pay attention to the backgrounds... but I think I did an okay job for the time I spent on it. Mostly used masks and a little bit of cloning.

Another Filter Self-Portrait

Number one: I am sort of pissed because I accidentally saved the other one I did as 72 ppi. aweofijaoeifj

Number two: I can't seem to get away from these busy pieces. I deleted some things, but it is still super busy. I like that, but at the same time I don't.

[update]

Tried to make it a lot less busy. I like how everything from the original photo is pixelated and/or distorted, but the cartoon images of me are the only real crisp/clear parts.

And this one is still 72 ppi... but... cut out one of the images of myself, cropped and here it is. Still too busy, but I like it. I think I might like the other one better now though... so... yay?

4.06.2010

My professor didn't even show up today...

One canvas... started with trying to paint this but kept doing something wrong, so wiped it off, did the Asian face below... who kind of looks like my friend Sola... but didn't like how it was turning out, wiped off, started painting a dinosaur... didn't like that, wiped off, then did the one above and really liked it!!!! Discovered... more reverse painting... except now painting with paint remover!!!! Whaaaatttt??? Pretty neat effect.

Filter Portrait Progress Pt. II

Prof said the other version was too much like a background and that I should put more of me in there... not sure if she knows that every part of that image is just a filter on one image... but I added more recognizable me plus a cartooned version. I like the other one better, but I definitely like the cartoon version of me in there. Much more personalized, thus much more like a portrait.

[4/9/10 update]

Ughhhh I am so mad that I accidentally overwrote my original file and saved it as 72 dpi instead of 300. I actually really liked this one. 8*****[ And I am too lazy to redo it. FFFFFF

4.05.2010

And I want to go to Europe.

Oh I forgot to sign this one. Oh well. Quick jumble in Photoshop. Finally installed the trial version right. Ugh.

And I want to go to sleep. So goodnight.

P.S. I guess I will format my entries as Picture, then description below. Whenever I see artists post their work, I just want to know their thought/creative processes and maybe what they did. But looking at the above one, some pictures don't really require that. for the lulz.

I want to go to Japan.

Quick jumble in ArtRage. Need a better program. Need Windows. Dammit. I will probably go back to PC's after this. Don't get me wrong, the Mac is hella bomb and it is pretty user friendly... but I like personalizing and it is soooo much easier to do what I want to do on a PC. Macs hide too many things from peeps who aren't computer savvy.

Idea: Gravity Boy

When I don't sleep, I think.

The idea of gravity came into mind. Scientists still don't really know what it is, but basically, it's like the force that keeps these magnetic chess pieces standing upright on the board. [image from google]

We always have this mindset of what is up or down [ex: gravity is pulling us down]. But what if you could control which "direction" gravity goes in?

THEREFORE:

Gravity Boy and his friend, Paula, otherwise known as gravity [she keeps her secrets so well that scientists don't even know how she works!].

Gravity Boy doesn't defy gravity, he... manages it? Or he works with it/her. I've done some sketches for it... but they're not very clear. What I want to portray is gravity changing "directions" so instead of falling down, maybe you'll fall to the left or 28 degrees to the right.

In the following image, see how he is falling down... then gravity shifts [just for him] and so he is actually falling to the left now. Yayyyy it's like he's flying. But really just constantly falling. What a terrible feeling that must be. Hm.

Most likely this will be stuffed into my file of stories I will probably never finish lol

Among those in more recent times...
  • a reversal of gender roles in wartime
  • everyone gets drunk within a certain tolerance radius of a girl, so she becomes friends with a really big guy because he has a pretty high tolerance to alcohol... but alcohol hurts your body just the same, whether you feel it or not.
  • how we would live our lives if we didn't know/acknowledge death/mortality
  • a film about the ends of movies that is really long and boring that seems like it'll never end and then ends abruptly #trolling
  • lessons learned from driving
  • a lesbian woman or gay man [originally had it woman, but iono. Never developed story enough to decide] who is only attractive to the opposite sex [I'll just conveniently put an ad in right here... can't figure out why the banner html won't show up. Lame.]

Sketches and a Happy Birthday to Lebedeff

[Fyi: You can click on the images for larger versions]

Here are some sketches I've done in the past month.

This one is a gift/card [I guess? I don't really do gifts or cards. Just pictures. lol] for my geeky friend, Lebedeff, who is probably getting crunk on Space Mountain right now hahaha

Done with sharpies... ffffff Being home sucks. There are seriously no writing utensils with good ink in them except for one sharpie lol We have some pencils, but no erasers. Sigh.

I came up with this one last night. Just ballpoint. I would really like to make it into a painting, maybe a series even, if I can figure that out.

Just a quick pencil sketch of an overplayed idea I've had swimming around in my head for a while.

I am Facebook, Twitter, and the Internet.

A friend referred me to a Facebook group called "Fuck College, I wanna be a Panda" and there are some pretty legit panda facts on there. I wanted to illustrate them. Here are the first two in red sharpie.

Legit, right? The PandaBear Jew [Inglourious Basterds reference if you don't get it]. Oh, I guess I didn't scan the 2nd one, but you can kind of see it imprinted on the back of the one above lol E'splodin pandas = party pandas! Okay, that wasn't really what #2 was, but it's basically the same thing.

Sketched these last night because I am a sad and pathetic creature and I couldn't sleep and I needed sleep to go to the Jelly Belly Factory for the first time with a friend today... ended up not going because, well, I didn't get any sleep and I feel terrible. ALSO, accidentally set my alarm to the Pokemon Theme Song instead of vibrate, so I woke up to the theme blasting in my ear, which caused my heart to race so fast that my hands were shaking. Bad omens. Sad panda. I really wanted to go to the Jelly Belly Factory 8[

Oh yeah, and the bottom part of all that below the line is obviously from this morning. I am Garfield, the fat, orange, lasagna-loving, dog-kicking cat.
